It is quite normal to have a bit of wind this time of the year, especially in the afternoons. Actually the wind is a fisherman`s friend, warming the water and allowing food to become loose and drift into a direction which the experienced fisherman will exploit. With the strong winds blowing the food straight to Spreeuwalle, it’s no surprise that the cob have been showing there lately. Also Stumps exceeding 40 cm came on the bite. Around the Island the water is too cold and with kite surfers enjoying the wind, it’s not ideal for fishing. Right down on the Line a massive Elf of more than 5kg was caught as well as some Cob of about 5kg. It certainly shows that the Baan is recovering after the Festive season with all the water sports that caused the fish to go into hiding.
This weekend looks to be promising with low tide in the afternoon, ideal for fishing around the turn of the tide. Those that need to pump prawn could be having a problem with only being able to pump when it`s low tide, so maybe it is a good idea to use white mussel instead. Catch rate will be lower, but the big Stumps might prefer the mussel. Mornings should show only a breeze and even the afternoons will not have those strong winds.
Those being fortunate to fish from a boat will again enjoy launching at the Yacht club as with the Festive season now gone, non members are once again to use the facilities. From the shore..it is recommended to fish South of the Paaltjies, Lientjiesklip and should you want to take a long walk then Spreeuwalle is a good option. At the Spit there is not much happening.
Bait should be prawn and white mussel for Stumps and for everything else, it should be pilchards.
Well enjoy the weekend and fill up those empty freezers with a fry.
God bless.
